Kealakehe High School community council meets

Parents, community members, students, faculty and staff are invited to third monthly Kealakehe High School WaveRider SCC/Hokupaa Council meeting. It is planned at noon Thursday in the Kealakehe High School Library Workroom.

The council is seeking new members. If there is a quorum, the new school logo proposal, the merger and official name change of the SCC and Hokupaa Council as well as the process of bringing in and hearing the student voice will be discussed.

Teen reading group meets

Sponsored by Friends of the Libraries, Kona, Teen Readers in Kona is a reading club for book sharing, socializing with other teens and eating snacks.

The group meets from 11 a.m. to noon Friday on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library to share and discuss “Six of Crows” by Leigh Bardugo. Those interested can quickly register at the reference desk, and as a member sign out a book.

Save the date for Rotary gala

In 2017, the Rotary Club of Kona Mauka will celebrate 50 years of serving its community. To mark the milestone, the club will announce two community projects it will fund. It will also host a gala on May 6 at Sheraton Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.

Former members and spouses, members of other Rotary clubs, distinguished guests and supporters will be invited for an evening of food, music and memories. Tickets will be available in the new year. Rotary Club of Kona Mauka is also seeking photos of the clubs and its members from times gone by. Contact the club if you have photos they can scan.

Student creative writing competition coming up

The Committee on the Status of Women invites all Hawaii Island students in grades 5-12 to enter the Real Women Creating Writing Competition.

The exercise is designed to raise the awareness of both male and female students about the wealth of women’s history and encourage them to appreciate the significant women in their lives.

The committee’s mission is to advocate for the rights of the women of Hawaii Island and to support and provide services that help empower women.
